Sprint Predictability

For two decades, I've seen engineering teams chase velocity like a holy grail. We meticulously track story points, obsess over burndown charts, and constantly refine our estimation processes. But velocity, while useful, only tells part of the story. A team consistently "hitting" its velocity target isn't necessarily a predictable team. And predictability, in my experience, is far more valuable – for the team, for product, and for the business.

I recently worked with a team that consistently “delivered” at 100% of velocity, yet perpetually missed deadlines and frustrated stakeholders. They were busy, but not reliable.   • Sprint Completion Rate: What percentage of stories committed to in a sprint are actually completed? Aim for 80-90%. A consistently low completion rate signals issues with scope, estimation, or blockers.
  • Story Point Accuracy: How accurate are your story point estimations? Track the difference between estimated effort and actual effort. Significant discrepancies indicate a need for refined estimation techniques.
  • Blocker Resolution Time: How long does it take to resolve blockers? Identify patterns and address root causes. Prolonged blocker resolution times suggest underlying process issues or skill gaps.
  • Mid-Sprint Scope Change: Track the number and size of scope changes made mid-sprint. Frequent or large scope changes erode trust and predictability.
