It's not just a better algorithm; it challenges our very definitions of creativity and authorship. But consider a less obvious example: the proliferation of ring-doorbell cameras. While offering convenience and security, they’ve sparked debates about privacy, surveillance, and the erosion of community trust – consequences few anticipated during their initial development.

As engineering leaders, we need to push our teams beyond incremental improvements and encourage them to explore genuinely breakthrough technologies. This requires fostering a culture of experimentation, embracing failure as a learning opportunity, and – crucially – asking the hard questions about potential societal impact before we ship. It’s also why chasing patent potential – beyond simply protecting IP – is important. A defensible invention suggests a true breakthrough, something that moves the needle.

For many, "doing tech" still conjures images of coding in a basement. But increasingly, it’s about data analysis, user experience design, AI ethics, cybersecurity, and a host of other specialized roles that require a mix of technical skills and critical thinking.

As leaders, we need to be aware of this evolving landscape. This means:

  • Investing in continuous learning: Beyond keeping up with the latest frameworks, encourage your team to explore the broader implications of their work.

We need to ask ourselves: “Who benefits from this technology, and how?” If the answer is “everyone but us,” then we have a problem.
